Heidi's Hotel Guide
The number of hotels in Einsiedeln is steadily decreasing. None has more than three - rather average - stars. If your standard is higher, you san stay in the nearby hotel Panorama at Feusisberg (from Einsiedeln en route to Schindellegi, Pfäffikon). As the name suggests it offers a view, in this case of the lake of Zurich.
Halfway between Einsiedeln and the hotel Panorama you will find the hotel Ramada. It offers no sight whatsoever unless you consider industrial buildings as such. If you feel the hotel Panorama is too expensive and the hotels in Einsiedeln too shabby then it is a good choice.
Among the three star hotels in Einsiedeln is the hotel Linde. The three stars, however, apply only to rooms in the new building which offers no sight of the abbey. The rooms in the old building have no own bathrooms and are not recommended. (The hotel has been sold and the old building will no longer be used as a hotel).
The hotel Drei Könige is an all three star hotel located on the upper side of the abbey square. In recent years it has undergone an extensive renovation.
The hotel St. Georg is the third three star hotel. It is situated in the upper part of the main street. The hotel Storchen just opposite serves as annex. The hotel was sold and is momentarily closed. It is supposed to open again after a complete overhaul. The hotel Storchen, however, will not open again.
The selection of two star hotels is not any larger. All of them are clustered together at the abbey square.
The rooms of the hotel Rot Hut are a bit small but quite all right. Do not expect to have an internet connection in your room: the hotel has no website, not even an e-mail address!
The hotel Bären is a hotel for the time being. It is listed for demolition and will be replaced by an apartment building. So inquire first or you may encounter a construction site instead of a hotel.
There are two more hotels which I do not mention by name, because one of the proprietors awarded himself three stars and the other one because he forbade me to judge his hotel.
For other type of accommodation such as holiday homes, mass accommodation and campgrounds, please contact Einsiedeln Tourism.
Note 1: There is a night ban on driving from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the centre of the town of Einsiedeln. Hotel arrivals, however, are permitted.
Note 2: Life starts early at the monastery. At 5:15 a.m. the bells chime the monks for prayer. If your room is facing the church towers you will be rudely awakened. The only help are earplugs or a longer stay in Einsiedeln. In that case you will get accustomed and will only wake up when the bells don't ring, which is on Good Friday.
